2 Easy Valentine's Day Art Sub Lessons

2 Valentine Art Sub Lesson Plans

We're always on the lookout for easy art sub plans for elementary kids. You don't, don't, DON'T want to leave your sub with anything difficult if you are not sure who is showing up to teach for you. Here are two easy art lessons from two different shops that are ready to hand to a sub. They have lots of visuals and instructions.

Elementary Level

Student drawing of a valentine heart design with pattern

This heart design activity could easily be created by you, but if you want one that is all ready to hand to a sub, the TPT Shop: Centers and Early Finishers might have just what you need. Click here if you want to take a closer look:  Valentine Art Activity for Centers, Subs, and Early Finishers Print copies of the template and the lesson and you're done.

Upper Elementary, Middle School or High School

Valentine's Day Art Sub Plan

If you need something for an older crowd, check out this lesson from the TPT Shop: Fun Classroom stuff. It leads students through creating a radial symmetrical design for Valentine's Day.  Make copies of the template, and it is ready to be handed

Integrating art with math, this also would work well for a STEAM or STEM class.  Click here to see this one:  Valentine STEM or STEAM Kaleidoscope Activity for Math and Art

Early Finishers Worksheets and Art Subs Lessons

Art Worksheets Elementary and Middle School

Teacher, I'm done. What do I do next?" A dreaded question, especially for a substitute teacher.  Answer: Art Worksheets

I have been creating fun classroom activities for years. Kids love them!  These drawing worksheets will also work great at home for distance learning. As a bonus, you can use these as art sub plans worksheets too!

Each worksheet has a lightly drawn outline of a character surrounded by images of possible cartoon features. Students choose the details they want and add them to the character.

Typically, I sell these on TPT for $.99 apiece, but recently I have added them as a bundle option.  In a bundle of 21, you save over $5.

The worksheets include these characters: block people, dragon, Jack O'Lanterns, bunny, reindeer, turkey, panda, trolls, elves, penguins, monster, gingerbread house, monkey, yeti, turtle, frog, claw machine, groundhog, nutcracker, leprechaun, and Little Red Riding Hood.

Here are the individual items that are included in this bundle.

Winter Middle School Art Sub Plans

Winter Art Project - STEAM

Here is a middle school and elementary school activity integrating art and math and ties with image samples for Christmas, Hannukah, and winter. The activity could be used elementary, middle, and high school. The designs can be as complex or simple as need be.

"Radial symmetry" is the focus of this lesson. This plan includes six templates to help students evenly draw their designs around the circle; five samples of completed designs; and a sheet of sample winter and holiday icons to help the kids add detail.

Perfect for early finishers, it works also for subs and as a center activity.  You can find this over at the TPT shop: Cool Classroom Ideas.

Students begin with a blank or minimally designed template that is lightly drawn in. They add radial symmetry. Directions are given for how to do this.

Here are previews of the lesson.

Halloween Art Lesson Plans for Elementary

Halloween Art Sub Lessons for Middle School and Elementary

Here are lessons your kids will love doing around Halloween. Some are full lessons in my TPT shop. Some are links to lessons on other blogs.  Some are ideas for great Halloween lessons. I thought they would be great for sub lessons, but an art teacher or classroom teacher could successfully teach them as well.

Here is a fun elementary art project for Cinco de Mayo, Halloween, or Day of the Dead. It can be set up as an art center; used as an early finishers project, or taught as an art sub lesson. There are templates, sample patterns, and examples of three different designs. See more about this set of worksheets at TPT Shop: Centers and Early Finishers

Haunted House drawing for elementary art lesson at Halloween

Here's a haunted house lesson that I created.  Find it here on TPT:  Art Sub Lessons - Halloween Haunted Houses or a  post about it here in this blog: Haunted House Lesson.

Here's a worksheet for early finishers at TPT.
"Create a Silly Monster"  This would be great for subs, art teachers, and classroom teachers.

Here's another one.  Yippee!!!  Creating Silly Monsters

art sub early finishers worksheet for halloween
Here's an extra goodie of my own.  Subs will love if you leave a worksheet for those early finishers!!!  This worksheet has an assortment of details for decorating their jack o' lantern. It also has a lightly drawn-in pumpkin for them to use as a base.  As a complete lesson, students could draw on another sheet, their own pumpkin shapes and use the worksheet as a reference.  There is also a sheet with 3 sample decorated pumpkins.  $.99 at my TeachersPayTeachers shop:  Art Sub Lessons.

STEAM drawing of a Mexican skull

This STEAM art activity would be fun to do around a Mexican holiday like Day of the Dead. If your students have seen the animated movie, “Coco,” they will be familiar with Día de Los Muertos. It would work perfectly as an art sub lesson. This lesson plan is by TPT Shop: Cool Classroom Stuff

This may be set up as a classroom learning center; an activity for early finishers; or as a teacher led lesson.

I found the most wonderful Halloween lessons that could be turned into art sub lessons.  Check these out!!!

Amy, at Makes and Takes, gives step-by-step instructions and many visuals for this lesson. She used black paper and oil pastel, but this could easily be done with crayons on lighter paper.

At Panicked Teacher, Susie gives you step by step instructions on how to make this patterned pumpkin.  I believe she is a classroom teacher who has to supplement art instruction in her class for most of the school year.

This lesson, at ArtfulNest, was written for middle school.  You could write it up as a fifth-grade lesson or a sixth-grade one.  You could also bring it down to the upper primary grades with a change of media.  Leave your subs some good visuals.  They could teach this!

Monster lesson.  There are lots of wonderful visuals and complete details here.  It is taught with paint and gadget prints, but you could so easily adapt it with crayons for your sub lesson. Visit Line FrØslev. There are wonderful things over there.

Here's one done for you already.  Step-by-step instructions were written here by Ms. Crisco over at Crisco Art. Always a good type of lesson to leave for a sub.

Art Worksheets Printables - Block Characters

Art Worksheet for Block Characters

Worksheet for Early Finishers

This is from my TPT shop: Art Sub Lessons.  It is a quick art project for early finishers but it would work well for a sub. There are three worksheets included. One worksheet has a figure lightly drawn in and students create their own characteristics over it. Another is the same worksheet but the character is drawn darkly. The last worksheet is a full-page character with nothing else. Students may create characters from stories, movies, sports, hobbies, or their own imaginations. There are sample body features that they may use or they may invent those too. There are teacher samples included so that you don't have to spend the time to do it yourself!

Some teachers have told me that it works well as a jumping-off place for a writing assignment.

Elementary  Art Sub Lessons for Winter and Christmas

Here is a winter activity that elementary kids will have fun creating. It was written so that it could be used as a winter drawing lesson for an art sub or as a learning center activity.

Students often ask if they can do a Christmas art lesson. This activity is geared as a winter activity, but the student could turn it into a Christmas one.

Fill a Claw Machine - Art Worksheets Printables

Fill a Claw Machine - Worksheet for Early Finishers

Here's an early finishers worksheet that kids would love to imagine filling.  It's great for after they finish their work or to include in a classroom station.  The claw machine, like the ones they see near the check-out lines at stores, is waiting for them to fill with what they wish was inside.

I hope you enjoy this worksheet and will follow me at TeachersPayTeachers.

December Art Worksheet - Reindeer in Disguise

December Art Activity for Early Finishers

This December worksheet for early finishers is a creative activity and time filler. Students will enjoy drawing this reindeer in disguise. A sub would also enjoy having an activity to hand to students who need to occupy their time when their assignment is complete. This worksheet shows sample details, but students are encouraged to invent their own. The only supplies needed are pencils and crayons.

Circle Drawing - Relief Teaching Ideas

Art Sub Plans Using Circles

The blog post I am linking to is about Choice in the art room.  I love this drawing in the round though, and could see a sub doing it. This post is from Donald Art Room. You could create a lesson on pattern, symmetry or radial design.
