Art Sub Plan - Secret Rooms

Favorite Lesson

I really don't understand it, but kids from elementary to high school, LOVE dreaming about hidden spaces. Whether it is a secret container to hide your money or jewels from robbers to secret rooms in pyramids or mansions, kids seem to love dreaming up secret spaces.

There is an illustration of the hidden space under the Lincoln Memorial in DC at Atlas Obscura.  I have been to the Lincoln Memorial many times and had no idea there was anything beneath the memorial!

You can use that illustration and website to inspire a lesson about secret rooms or do an internet search and you can find plenty of examples.

Kids are also intrigued by the pyramids of Egypt and the maps of the inner corridors. Hidden passageways drawings are a great art connection to the study of Ancient Egypt.

Prepared Art Sub Lessons: Secret Rooms/Hidden Passageways

If you don't want to create your own lesson, I have one in my TPT shop you might like. It is complete with  historic references, student samples, and a complete script for what to say to teach the lesson.

Here are some reviews of the lesson.

"⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ My students loved this project! The slide show with all of the interesting examples of hidden spaces was excellent and motivating. The students produced very detailed ideas after the slide show. I used it as a sub plan with a few classes when I had to be gone, and then I taught it in another class because the ones who had it from the sub loved it so much! " Used in 4th, 5th and 6th grades

Unique Creature Art Lesson for Subs

 Collaborative Drawings

This post is from 2011 at Briargrove Elementary Art Page. One of the things I love about this lesson is that every drawing is different from every other drawing. Students are inspired to create their own unique creatures.

Katie Gonzales gives directions for how to teach this lesson. A sub could easily follow along. You can get this lesson here:  http://katieweymouth.blogspot.com/2011/11/first-lesson-of-year-collaborative.html

Art Sub Lesson Plan Using Crayon

Recycled Crayons as the Main Medium - Kindergarten

Always on the lookout for sub plans for art, I stumbled across this website today.

Here's an art lesson that I have seen before, but here they give the numbers of standards and objectives that you might have to use when you submit your sub lessons.

This is a version of "Alphabet Soup" that could be used from kindergarten to fifth grade. Click here to see this lesson plan and others:  Crayon Collection.org

Elementary Art Sub Plans | Romero Britto

Romero Britto Inspired Elementary Art Activity

This lesson is from the Elements of the Artroom blog. Mrs. Stacey provides many examples from this second-grade art lesson. I believe an art sub could teach a lesson based on this.

Here is another 2nd or 3rd-grade art lesson about Romero Britto.  This one is at The Talking Walls blog.  There are plenty of instructions so you could easily translate this to an art sub lesson.

I could see this used for second through fifth grades.

If you would like to see a fully formed, lesson you can just email to your school office when you are out, check out this blog post:  Romero Britto Figure Lesson for K and 1

Art Sub Plans - Silly Sundae Preview

Art Sub Lessons "Silly Sundae"

Find relief when you have an emergency absence. Writing lesson plans for a sub when you are in a rush, feels horrible. Don't stress out when you don't need to.  I have complete no-prep lesson plans already fully formed for you.

This is a preview of my art sub lesson called "Silly Sundae." I thought you would get more information from a preview of this lesson than just from one or two images. Find this fun elementary lesson at my TpT Shop: Art Sub Lessons.

This lesson is no prep and can be taught by anyone.  All someone needs to do is to show each page; read the script, and follow the directions. Subs love my lessons because there is a lot of content and they will keep the students engaged for the entire class period.

Back to School Art Sub Plans - Dot Day

Dot Day for Back to School Art

Teachers love to integrate Dot Day into their Back to School lessons since, for many, they happen around the same time. (September)

Here are Dot Day lessons from Ms. O’Hanley, Tales from the Traveling Art Teacher  She’s got a video link and multiple lesson ideas that a sub could do.

One of my favorites is this radial symmetry design done on a paper plate.  Check it out!
