Grids and Blocks - High School Art Sub Idea 

This is from Nic Hahn (aka Mini Matisse).....from Maureen Crosbie on Flickr. From what I read in the comments on Flickr and the blog, some kids as young as 10 can master it and some 8th graders had trouble with it. This might be a lesson you would want to give a test run with those students before you tried leaving it with a sub.

Radial Name Design Art Sub Lesson 

This post originally led to a lesson at a blog called Art4Cast. It seems that this blog no longer exists. 

From what I can tell, this is how this radial name design was created. 

Starting at the center of the paper, draw lines that spiral out to the edges of the paper.

The students' names may be written in bubble letters in every space, or alternate the spaces with names and patterns.

There are other radial name design lessons on the web, but I am not sure they are sub-friendly. 

Mazes - Art Sub Plan

Mazes is a lovely sub lesson from Art is Basic. It would be excellent for middle school and upper elementary.  I think with some tweaking, it would be fun for younger ones too.

Paper Sculpture as an Art Sub Plan

Paper sculpture, or dealing with glue and scissors, is not something I would leave for just any ole substitute teacher. If you have a trusted and true one though, that might be just fine.

I found these images online and am still looking for a fully written lesson to go with it. I have found some beautiful images though.

The next one also has an image.  It's on an Artsonia page and has no written lesson plan, but I think you can formulate one fairly easily though.

Using Stencils for Art Sub Activities

Kids ought to love having a sub if they get to use stencils.  Stencils are something I so rarely let students use except as an activity for early finishers.  They love them though. Why not let them experiment with them a bit. I believe the engagement will be high, and your sub will certainly appreciate kids being engaged.

This lesson can be found at Draw, Doodle, and Decorate.  It uses simple materials: paper, crayon, or markers. You can create your own templates out of poster board or collect painting or tracing stencils. You can also use jar lids or interesting shaped flattish objects.

Here's a post that  Splish, Splash, Splatter did from my video on YouTube, Tar Beach.  This made me so happy. 

I made that video before I ever thought about making a blog for art sub lessons. My goal was to provide a good lesson for my students while they had a sub in the room. I created the video so that all a sub had to do was to press “Play" and the kids would follow along.  I think her kids did a great job.

Easy and Free Art Sub Plans for Kindergarten

Here is a free art sub PowerPoint lesson for you at my  Teachers Pay Teachers shop: Art Sub Lessons.  This lesson is one I use with kindergarten.  We do lots of moving around making the shapes of lines as we look at the slides. TeachersPayTeachers requests that you make your free PowerPoints smaller than your "for pay" ones, but this is still full of good images and information for your students and subs.

Here are a couple of "easy sub lessons" from Dali's Moustache.  One is a third grade lesson about Jackson Pollack's action paintings.  The other is a fourth-grade lesson called "crayon fireworks."

Another easy way to prepare for an art sub is to go to my shop, Art Sub Plans. I have created complete lessons in which all your sub has to do is read the slides and follow the directions.  They are full of visuals and are created to be used with the most simple supplies.  Pencils, paper and crayons are all your students will need to create imaginative works of art.

These are perfect for those emergency absences when you do not have the time to write detailed plans but want to leave quality plans for your subs.

Looking for easy art lessons with the theme, “Scribble Monsters,” I found many versions on YouTubeKids.

Middle School Art Sub Plan - Alphabeasties

Elementary and Middle School Art Sub Lesson with Typography 

"Ms. Art Teacher" did this lesson with students and then also left it as a sub lesson. It is based on the book Alphabeasties and Other Amazing Types,  by Werner and Forss. 

The illustrator has filled in the shape of the animal with the name of the animal. I can imagine where this same idea can be applied to other images of things and using a variety of words to describe the image.

This is an alphabet book to help little ones to read, so your older kids won’t be so interested in that part. The illustrations are really interesting though. “Ms. Art Teacher” did the lesson with 2nd through 7th graders. She also left the lesson with a sub and found that was successful.

There are multiple read-aloud of the book on YouTube, so you can always fall back on that if you can’t find the book itself.

If you like lessons in which students use their imaginations to create wondrous and mysterious places, you might like this one of mine. Created as a sub lesson, it can be taught by teachers and parents too.  It is no prep and completely ready to teach.

Abstract Art from Map - Art Sub Plan Idea

Substitute Art Teacher Lesson Plan 

This art lesson combines Mondrian with maps.  It is from The Incredible Art Department

The students learn about Piet Mondrian and his use of line and color.  Then, they apply that to a map drawing activity.  They could use a variety of materials to draw and color in the map.

Art Sub Lesson "Wacky Hats"

This is a sub lesson that I teach myself as an art sub but used to teach in my own classroom before I retired.  I have added it to my TeachersPayTeachers store because it is such a successful lesson.  The kids get highly engaged and stay busy the entire class time.

It would be fun as a lesson for "Crazy Hat Day" at your school.  Art teachers could use it and so could classroom teachers.

When I left it for a sub of my own, she had high praise for this lesson. She left these comments: "Thank you for the wonderful plans.  Great lesson." and "They LOVED the photos and your drawings."

Here's a sub lesson from Artisan Des Arts.  She's included detailed instructions and graphics that a sub could follow easily.  She said that originally she got the lesson from Teach Kids Art, who also had nice graphics and instructions.

Art Sub Plans - Imaginary Treehouse

This afternoon I was searching for a ready-made art sub lesson about imaginary treehouses. I just could not find one. Tonight, as I was searching for something for my bulletin board blog, I found the treehouse lesson!

I've left a similar lesson with a sub before and it turned out just fine.

I designed this lesson to be no prep; fully scripted; and ready to print and go. All a sub needs to do is to read each slide and respond to the students' comments. The materials needed are the most simple: crayons and paper.

This lesson may be taught as a PowerPoint projection or printed out and each page shown, one-by-one.

The students are introduced to unique treehouse designs, that will encourage the student to let their imaginations lead their own designs.

I have tested this on my own art subs and have gotten positive feedback. My students also expressed to me that they were excited to create their own drawings.
