Art Sub Plans - Cows on Parade

Cows on Parade Art Sub Plans - Middle School and Elementary

How fun to watch a parade!!! It’s been a while since I’ve been to one, but I can’t wait to see another. My heart starts to pump hard when I hear that bass drum in the distance, and tears start to well up when the rest of the band comes into earshot.

I hope that your kids have gotten a chance to see a parade or two.

Here are some fun art lessons based on the events in multiple cities called a “Cow Parade.” Here’s a website for the main idea: Cow Parade

These cow forms have been painted by all sorts of folks, including famous artists and designers.

Here’s a blog post about how this teacher created artist themed bulletin boards with the theme of Cow Parade in mind.  Cow Parade at Middle Brook School I believe that her students also made small ones for themselves.

You could totally form an art sub lesson around this. I would created cardboard cow templates for the kids to trace and them let them create their own designs inside.

Get some images from the web about designs that have been used, or purchase some of the Cow Parade books. I think kids would have fun with this.

I wrote another post on the topic a few years ago. You can find that one here:  HerDabbles blog: Cows on Parade

A Tree House for Me! Elementary Art Sub Plan

"A Treehouse for Me!"  Elementary Art Sub Lesson Plans

Kids love the idea of secret and special places that are reserved for just them. I never had a treehouse as a kid but I always loved seeing them in movies and reading about them in books. Knowing that kids would love imagining them, I created this art project for drawing tree houses.

"A Treehouse for Me!" as a Sub Lesson

This lesson has always been a big hit with my own students, so I wrote it up as an art sub-plan. Why leave the sub lessons that you wouldn't love to teach?

I write the lessons for my TPT shop in a way that anyone can teach them.  This one is chock full of images of real tree houses and student drawings of them. All anyone would need to do to teach this would be to show each page/slide; read the script on them; ask the questions, and pass out the supplies.

Enjoyed by Kids in K-8th Grade

Originally, I taught this as a 5th-grade art project, but in the reviews for this lesson, teachers say they have taught it in K-8th grade with great success. Here are some reviews left by teachers who have used this:

So, if you want an art lesson or a sub-plan this is a sure thing, click here to go check it out at my TeachersPayTeachers shop: Art Sub Lessons. (It costs less than a cup of coffee, so you can't go wrong!)

Elementary Art Sub Plans - Kooky Cars

Elementary and Middle School Art Sub Lesson

One of the lessons I love teaching the most is one I call, "Kooky Cars." It is both an art history lesson and a creative drawing lesson about art cars. It includes the work of Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Keith Haring. The students imagine their own crazy art cars and draw one of their own.

Here is a review that I got this week about this lesson:

"My students absolutely loved this project! In fact, it is their favorite one to do, and they ask to repeat it quite often. It kept them engaged in creating and wanting to learn more about the artists that were represented in the slides. They learned to think out of the box and to use their voice through their art. Thank you so much for sharing your lesson. We all love it!"

Yay! My students have always loved it too!

STEAM Art Sub Lessons Idea - City of the Future

STEAM  Lesson for Elementary, Middle and High School

I get ideas for art sub lessons from all sort of places.  This one came from Flickr. Fabrice Florin teaches an after school STEAM course called "Maker Art" at Tam High. While the initial lesson eventually leads to a sophisticated sculpture, the idea could be a great jumping off place for an art sub lesson. Check out his Flickr page to see more in depth ideas for this lesson.

Popular Art Sub Lessons

Art Sub Lessons Ready Right Now

Art teachers and parents are looking for lessons they can use right now; ones that are full lessons to teach. Here are the fully formed lessons most often purchased from my shop this week.

These are scripted, no prep lessons that can use paper and pencil.  Pens, markers, crayons, or colored pencils would certainly enhance the artwork, but if someone only has pencil and paper, they can still do these lessons. These are full of images with examples of art student artwork.

These are PowerPoint presentations that can be printed out, projected, and viewed on your device screen.

They are fully scripted and can be taught by anyone. Parents would have no problem going through them with their children. They are meant to inspire students to create their own inventions and not just copy what they see.

Click on the images to go to the lesson on my TPT shop.

Art Sub Plans - Leprechaun Trap

St. Patrick’s Day Art Sub Plans for Elementary

Child drawing of a leprechaun trap

Child drawing of a leprechaun trap

Here is an elementary art activity for St. Patrick's Day and March. The blog "Coffee Cups and Crayons" has written up a fun and engaging activity called "Making a Leprechaun Trap."

Megan gives information about how she did the activity with her kids, but you could write up the directions in lesson plan form pretty easily.  There is discussion, interaction and drawing.  With her kids she had them draw on an old cereal box for a 3D effect. The drawing should work just as well on a sheet of paper.  Her post is a good jumping off place for you to create a St. Patrick's themed sub plan.

St. Patrick’s Day STEAM Lesson

If you are looking for a St. Patrick's Day lesson for upper elementary and middle school, you might try this STEAM activity.

Students create a design using radial symmetry. Templates and samples are provided to give the students a boost to start.  You can find that at the TPT shop: Cool Classroom Stuff.

Here's one more idea for St. Patrick's Day that works great as a sub lesson or early finishers activity.

The TPT Shop: Centers and Early Finishers has a doodle/pattern filling shamrock design that kids will enjoy.

Here's one for the early finishers.  "Create a Leprechaun in Disguise."

Are there any other great ideas out there for St. Patty's Day?  Let me know in the comments.

Secret Rooms and Hidden Passageways

Art Sub Plan - Secret Rooms and Hidden Passageways

Before I got a job teaching art, I taught fifth grade.  I taught my class art when I could and tied it into our lessons.  When I taught the pyramids, my students drew imaginary interiors to the pyramids. They were enthralled, and so excited to share their drawings.  I have been meaning to recreate that experience as an art sub lesson for years.  Finally, I did it.

This is a lesson I named, "Secret Rooms and Hidden Passageways." Students look at a variety of hidden spaces in artwork; in history; and in imaginary images.  They then create their own space with trap doors, hidden rooms, secret hallways, and all manner of spaces that are tucked away.

You may find it in my TpT shop:  Art Sub Lessons

Elementary Art Sub Lessons for Winter

Elementary  Art Sub Lessons for Winter and Christmas

Here is a winter activity that elementary kids will have fun creating. It was written so that it could be used as a winter drawing lesson for an art sub or as a learning center activity.

Students often ask if they can do a Christmas art lesson. This activity is geared as a winter activity, but the student could turn it into a Christmas one.

You can find it at the Teachers Pay Teachers store: Centers and Early Finishers.

7 Easy Art Lessons About Monsters

7 Easy Art Sub Lessons About Monsters

Here are easy elementary art lessons about monsters (plus a bonus one!)
These would be great around Halloween time or to use with those units on monsters.

"There Be Monsters" is a lesson about sea monsters as they were drawn on ancient maps.
Students observe the old maps and monsters and create their own. You can find the lesson at my TPT Shop:  There Be Monsters!

Originally, this lesson was posted on a blog called, “Clown and Poodle.” It appears that it no longer exists. However, I had written a blog post inspired by the original, and that still exists. You can see that complete lesson in my blog post here: Purple People Eater

Here’s a lesson at Ms. Pearce's Art Room called "Circle Monsters." Kids love
tracing shapes. Here they can create original monsters just by starting with tracing circles.

This "Name Alien" lesson is by We Heart Art.
This lesson ends up far from where it begins!

This sweet kindergarten lesson is by Artisan des Arts.

"Her Dabbles" came up with this lesson called Silly Monsters.

This Scribble Monster lesson came from "Art with Ms. B.”
Though that blog no longer seems to exist, I left the picture here because the idea is a good idea. Since that blog post isn’t around anymore though, I found another scribble monster lesson for you.

This is a YouTube video by Emily Brosius. This is a video lesson, so it is complete with all the instruction you need.

Lastly, here is an art worksheet that I have in my TPT Shop. “Create A Silly Monster”
This drawing worksheet includes directions and sample details for drawing a monster. All you need to do is print and distribute. Great for centers, subs and early finishers too.

Art Sub Plan - Fairy Houses and Gnome Homes

Art Lesson Plan about Fairies and Gnomes

This art sub lesson could be used as an end-of-the-year lesson. At this time of year, your kiddos will need some lessons that are engaging.

Here's a lesson that I taught to over 800 students this winter as I was subbing for art teacher friends.  It talks about fairies and gnomes and where they might live. We looked at illustrations from fairy tales and also at photographs of fairy houses and gnome homes that people have built for fun. We also looked at student illustrations and talked about the fun houses that the kids dreamed up.

I taught it to kindergarteners all the way up to fifth graders.  They were engaged and having fun as I taught it.  I wrote it as a sub lesson, but it can be taught by an art teacher or classroom teacher as well.

It is over at my TeachersPayTeachers Shop: Art Sub Lessons.

If you like this lesson, you might also like this worksheet for early finishers.  Your sub would reallyappreciate having something for your students to do if they finish their art work before the end of class!
